Texas would later appear in 22 cotton Bowls, the highest number of appearances for any team.

The first interracial game at Cotton Bowl Stadium was played in 1948 between Penn State and Dallas SMU. The Penn State team stayed in a Naval Air Station situated 14 miles from Dallas because no hotel would offer accommodation to two African-American players in the team.

The most famous game was played in 1954. Dickey Moegle of Rice started running into the open field from his side’s 5-yard line. Tommy Lewis of Alabama tackled him from the bench. The referee went on to signal touchdown at the 42-yard line despite having seen what had happened.

Syracuse beat Texas 23-14 in 1960 to win the national championship. Syracuse was led by Ernie Davis. There was a fight before the end of the first half as Texas was accused of this dirty game. In 1969, Texas continued with their new Wishbone offensive formation. They had defeated all opponents in the 1968 season. They won the SWC crown again after defeating Tennessee Volunteers 36-13.

A historic comeback in the history of bowling happened in 1979 in a game between Notre Dame and Houston. In the fourth quarter, Notre Dame was trailing Houston 34-12.
